Nina Kostuk Plukas, a longtime resident of Trumbull, entered into peaceful rest on Friday, December 15. Born October 4, 1922, in Bridgeport, CT, she was the beloved wife of the late Martin J. Plukas, and the daughter of the late Ilya and Mary Lewko Kostuk. A member of the Class of 1940, Nina graduated from Central High School in Bridgeport. She moved to Trumbull in 1950 where she spent her remaining years. Along with her husband of 60 years, Nina was the owner of the Community Pharmacy in Lordship, CT, from 1953-1968.
Nina was a devout, lifetime member of the Holy Ghost Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church, where she was baptized and married. She was active in the Women’s Guild and Russian Senior Club where she served as president and treasurer. In her youth she was a member of the church’s Balalaika Orchestra. Nina cherished her Russian heritage and greatly enjoyed family gatherings, which inevitably ended in a game of cards. She also enjoyed spending time fishing on Long Island Sound with her husband, Marty. An avid gardener, Nina took great pride in her gardens sharing the fruits of her labors with family and friends. She loved and cared for her cats as if they were her children. Honored as a Volunteer of the Year by Bridgeport Hospital, Nina took pride in her extensive volunteer work for more than 25 years. She worked in the pharmacy and as a patient escort during her many years of service to the hospital.
Nina is survived by her sister, Eugenia (Jennie) Uliasz, and her brother, John Kostuk, her sister-in-law, Jeraldine Kostuk, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her lifelong friend, Jean Clark. Nina was predeceased by her brothers, Nicholas and Michael Kostuk. The family would like to thank VITAS Healthcare and Bridges by Epoch in Trumbull for their caring and compassionate care.
Calling hours will take place on Tuesday December 19, 2017 from 9:30 to 10:30am in the Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main St. Bridgeport.
