Lydia Ramos age 86 of Bridgeport, loving wife of 63 years to Herminio Ramos passed away peacefully on Wednesday December 13, 2017 with her loving family by her side. She was predeceased by her parents Lino Silva Figueroa and Sarah Suarez as well as three brothers Lino Silva, David Figueroa and Ruben Silva from Puerto Rico. Lydia was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico and came to New York in 1952 and in 1953 she married Herminio Ramos. Together they moved to Bridgeport Connecticut in 1967. She was a devout Catholic and a member of Saint Mary's Church where she became a Crucillista and a Eucharistic minister. She dedicated many years serving the Lord at St. Mary's Church. She was trilingual, English, Spanish and American Sign Language after over 25 years she retired from the Bridgeport Board of Education as a paraprofessional working with children with special needs. Lydia always worked with children and became a foster and adoptive parent with the Department of children and families. For over 30 years she continued to open her home to many needy and homeless children. Lydia had many hobbies and attended many adult education evening classes to learn new skills from cake decorating to basket weaving. Lydia enjoyed sewing and baking. Her carrot cake and her flan were one of the best. She graduated from high school in Puerto Rico and attended Sacred Heart University. Lydia loved the holidays especially Christmas. She had an active social life as a member of the Cuban Lyceum in Bridgeport where she participated in many activities and social events with several friends. She will be remembered by many, for her kindness and generosity and for placing the needs of others above her own and never expecting personal recognition.
In addition to her husband of 63 years, she is survived by her daughters Susie Laffitte and husband Raul Laffitte, Terry Ramos, Mary Santiago and her husband Fernando Santiago, her sons Edwin Ramos and wife Lisa Ramos and Michael Ramos. She is also survived by her grandchildren Erica Laffitte, Sarah Laffitte, Christopher Ramos, Noah Ramos, Teaghan Ramos, Alex Santiago, and Jayanna Santiago. She also leaves behind three brothers in Puerto Rico, Ramon Luis Figueroa, German Silva and EFigenio Figueroa and wife Meña. As well as two sisters Luz Mena and Nelida also from Puerto Rico and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the 4th floor staff at St. Joseph Center in Trumbull and the caring staff at Bridgeport Hospital.
Calling hours will take place (TODAY) Thursday December 14, 2017 from 5 to 8pm in the Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main St. Bridgeport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30am in St. Mary Church, Bridgeport followed by interment in St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford.
